HOW WE PROTECT WILD SALMON STOCKS

Content-page_separator

Skuna Bay Salmon exists for one reason: to help feed the world and in doing so reduce pressure on wild fish stocks. We know that sounds dramatic but it’s our goal to always aim high.

Our feed - First of all, we believe that our fish should eat fish as they do in the wild. But we also want to reduce fishing pressure on other fish populations. So our fish food is roughly one quarter fish and our "Fish In/Fish Out" Ratio is now 1:1. Any fish based ingredients we do use come from 100% certified fisheries. The other ingredients are carefully selected to make sure that all of the nutritional needs of our salmon are met so that they can grow up with optimum health and include a blend of micro-nutrients, land proteins such as pea-meal and plant crops. All this delivers great tasting salmon with lots of healthy Omega 3’s and still allows us to be good environmental stewards.

Pen densities - At least 98.5% of our fish’s pen is water. Only 1.5% is our salmon. In scientific terms, we have less than 12 kg of fish for every cubic meter of water. This provides our salmon that all important space to allow them to be in constant motion, building strong, healthy tissue.

Fallow periods - Once we have harvested our fish from the water, we let that particular ocean site rest. We check the farm before restocking to make sure we are in balance with nature. One third of our farms are constantly fallow. That means we sacrifice potential farm use and revenue to ensure protection of the environment.
