Brown’s Bay Packing Company has been custom processing farmed fresh salmon in the spectacular Seymour Narrows of British Columbia since 1989. Today Bown's Bay employ as many as 45 full-time people and process in excess of 32 million lbs of product each year. This amounts to a payroll that injects $1.5 million into the local Campbell River economy and expenditures of more than $1.75 million for supplies and services from other British Columbia businesses.

- This will be a big change for all of us and will of course have an impact on Walcan, says Stewart Hawthorn.

The main reasons for the switch were:
Logistics: it is much easier to process in Campbell River rather than on Quadra Island when it comes to meeting ferry deadlines for getting fish to Vancouver and then to our customers elsewhere in North America.

Cost: the new contract has offered us some cost advantages over our existing arrangements.

Contract: the new contract has more security for us and has better defined service standards.

Plant Design: the Browns Bay plant is more modern and offers some processing advantages as a result of that.

- Walcan will continue to harvest and process our fish to the end of 2015, says Stewart.
